Ask permission before anchoring or going ashore.
Customary relationships shape access to local places. Arrange an introduction through your host or guide; ask who speaks for the place before landing or anchoring near a village. Introduce yourself and seek permission to stay, swim, dive or walk through the community. Respect local decisions and any requested arrangements.
Photography & sacred spaces.
Always ask before photographing people, including children, canoes, spirit houses or burial places. Follow local guidance and respect any area identified as tambu — restricted or sacred.
Fair trade & gifting.
Buy local produce and agree prices for guiding, transport and other exchanges with the people involved. Carry small kina notes. Ask your hosts whether gifts are welcome and what would be useful; every exchange begins with a conversation.
Modest dress ashore.
Wear modest clothing when visiting villages, covering swimwear with a shirt and a lap-lap, sarong or suitable shorts. Follow your hosts’ guidance about dress and community occasions.
