MAINLAND PROFILE / FOOD & FARMING

There is more to Milne Bay than its coastline.

Agaun is part of the province’s mountainous mainland. Its coffee-growing communities add an important dimension to a region often introduced through island resorts, reef waters and maritime heritage.

Coffee and the journey to market

In January 2015, The National reported a provincial government and Coffee Industry Corporation scheme to airlift Agaun coffee to Alotau before onward shipment to Lae. The report described the difficulty of getting produce out of an area without a road connection to the coast at that time.

The same broad challenge appears a decade later. NBC’s August 2025 report describes CIC and partners visiting Agaun and Rabaraba airstrips, with coffee bags waiting to reach buyers. These accounts show that transport is part of coffee history, alongside the work of growing the crop.

Read the dates as historical evidence of coffee production and freight initiatives. They do not establish today’s flight schedules or promise a bookable coffee tour.
