An island to include
in your journey.

For sailors exploring the Louisiades, Misima deserves its own place in the itinerary. Give yourself time for locally arranged shore visits and conversations, rather than treating the island only as a waypoint between passages.

Bwagaoia: plan your stop

Discuss an intended Bwagaoia stop with local contacts and the relevant authorities before departure. Ask about provisions, markets, fuel, drinking water, cash, phone coverage, landing access and guides. Availability can change; confirm what can actually be supplied for your vessel and crew before relying on it.

Declared entry status

PNG Customs’ published list of declared ports includes the Port of Misima (Bwagaoia). That provides a clear official basis for asking about an international arrival here. It does not establish unrestricted access to a wharf, permanent staffing or immediate attendance by every border agency.

Arrange Customs, Immigration and quarantine requirements in advance, confirm the boarding location, and obtain the approvals relevant to your vessel. PNG Customs’ small-craft guidance requires at least 48 hours’ arrival notice. Do not arrive expecting historical yacht-rally arrangements to apply automatically.

Connect with the wider Louisiades

Include Misima in a discussion of the Deboyne Islands, Panaeati and the wider archipelago with an experienced skipper. Choose stops around your vessel, weather windows, access permissions and the interests of your crew. No route or passage duration is prescribed here.

Visit as a guest

Ask the appropriate hosts before landing on customary land or visiting villages, and agree guiding or visitor fees in advance. Ask before photographing people, buy locally where practical and leave cultural material undisturbed.
