ISLAND PROFILE / MILNE BAY

Make time for a distinct island story.

Rossel, also known as Yela, is the easternmost island of the Louisiade Archipelago. ANU research on its prehistory has investigated occupation, interaction and the development of the island’s distinctive cultural setting.

A visitor guide can introduce that research, but it cannot replace the people who hold local knowledge. Arrange a host and approach cultural places, language and community life with curiosity and respect.

Planning your visit

Confirm local hosting and the practical means of reaching your intended destination. Avoid building a tight schedule around unconfirmed transport.

A locally hosted experience

Ask the appropriate hosts which places and activities they are comfortable sharing. Confirm fees, photography permission, transport and a return plan before setting out. Buy directly from local makers where possible and carry waste away.
