ISLAND PROFILE / MILNE BAY

An island shaped by exchange.

Samarai was once a major regional port and administrative centre. Its streets and waterfront form part of a layered history of shipping, commerce and colonial administration at the entrance to Milne Bay.

A locally guided visit can connect that history with the neighbouring islands and the lives of present-day residents. Nearby Kwato offers another perspective on mission history, schooling and local enterprise. Allow time for both places rather than treating the strait simply as a transit passage.

Planning your visit

Arrange a boat transfer and a host before leaving Alotau or your island base. Confirm the return trip, landing point and any guiding fees.

A locally hosted experience

Ask the appropriate hosts which places and activities they are comfortable sharing. Confirm fees, photography permission, transport and a return plan before setting out. Buy directly from local makers where possible and carry waste away.
